In Barranquilla, streets are called 'calles' and 'carreras'. 'Carreras' are roads that go from west to east and 'calles' go from south to north. The Magdalena River delimits the city from north to south and, in that same sense, guides the vehicular flow of one of its main roads: 40, which joins other main arteries such as Boyaca and Olaya Herrera avenues.
Public Transportation: Barranquilla offers a public transportation system with buses (Transmetro) and taxis, reaching all corners of the city.
Barranquilla is famous for its valuable Afro-Colombian heritage and the fusion of fresh and native flavors in its traditional dishes. You cannot miss the opportunity to try these delicious culinary delicacies during your visit to the city.
An example of these dishes is Lisa's Rice, considered a delicacy in Barranquilla. The Lisa, a marine fish found in the Magdalena River, is the main ingredient in this dish. Before being added to the rice and vegetable stew with cumin, Las Lisas are dried and salted. If you want to try it, you can find it in the street stalls, where it is served with serum and 'Bollo de Yuca', a delicious preparation typical of Barranquilla that uses cooked yuca, salt, and corn husks.
Guandu Sancocho with Salted Meat is also a delicious culinary option highly appreciated in the region. The Guandu, a native legume with possible African roots, is the main ingredient in this dish. It is combined with salted meat, yam, yuca, and ripe plantain, creating an exquisite combination of flavors. In addition, spices such as cilantro and Creole chives are added to enhance their flavor. A perfect option to enjoy local cuisine!
The Barranquilla Carnival is the most iconic and recognized national and international event in Barranquilla. In Barranquilla, more events are celebrated every year such as:

Please keep in mind the following tips before traveling to Barranquilla. The city has type A or B plugs, so ensure to carry a type A adapter if you have a type B or European type C plug; in some places only Type A plugs are available. The voltage in the city is 110V AC and the grid is stable all the time.
Most businesses in the city accept credit cards, so we recommend carrying at least $100,000 in cash per person and day, especially if you plan to visit rural places or distant towns. Colombian Pesos come in $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, and $100,000 bills.
The tap water in Barranquilla is 100% drinkable, but we don't recommend drinking tap water in nearby municipalities and towns. So, it's better to drink bottled water or bottled drinks. On most tours, we'll provide you with a hydration kit, which includes environmentally friendly bottles or containers.
For this destination, we recommend wearing sunglasses, a hat, or a cap to protect you from the sun, sunscreen, and fresh beach clothing to cover you from the sun. This is a beach destination and the climate is hot. Our guides will guide you with the appropriate clothing to visit the destinations from the day before.
